    The Basics

  1. Tempera paint is made from a combination of pigment, medium and water. Egg yolks have acted as the medium or binder in tempera paints for centuries, but other sticky substances like glue or honey could also be used. Once egg tempera paint has dried, it creates a water-resistant, long-lasting painting.
  2. Making Egg Tempera at Home

  3. To make egg tempera paint at home, gather powdered pigment, several eggs with the yolks separated, water, a dropper and a palette to mix on. First, separate the yolks. To ensure that no egg white clings to the yolk, pass the yolk across the surface of a paper towel. Then puncture the yolk sac and let the yolk drain into a small jar. Add a teaspoon of water to the egg yolk and mix. Be sure the powder pigment is finely ground (grind further if necessary) and then mix with water until a thick paste forms. Place a small amount of the pigment on the palette. Dab an equal amount of the egg medium onto the palette next to the pigment and begin mixing the two together. Add water using the dropper, until the desired consistency is formed.
  4. Warnings

  5. Since the ingredients in egg tempera paint are natural, they will spoil quickly if not refrigerated. Also, some pigments used to mix tempera paints are toxic. Use gloves and wear a smock or apron to protect from stains.
