What is Benzoyl Peroxide?

Benzoyl peroxide is an FDA-approved chemical compound from the same family of synthetic chemicals as hydrogen peroxide and bleach. Benzoyl peroxide was one of the first proven treatments for mild to moderate acne. It still remains the most frequently used acne treatment for teenagers and adults. Benzoyl peroxide can be found in popular over-the-counter products like Clearasil and ProActiv Solution. It is the active ingredient in many lotions, gels and prescription strength acne creams. Benzoyl peroxide has been tested safe for continued use and is also relatively inexpensive.
What Does Benzoyl Peroxide Do?

Benzoyl peroxide can be found in several different products but the effects of the compound are similar. Acne breakouts are primarily caused by propionibacteria acnes, or P. acnes, the bacteria that clogs pores. These bacteria cannot survive in oxygen-rich environments. Benzoyl peroxide bombards the pores with oxygen-rich, aerobic materials that kill the bacteria. By reducing the bacteria population, benzoyl peroxide is able to reduce breakouts on the skin. Future breakouts are also prevented by benzoyl peroxide. It clears the follicle of dead skin cells and cellular debris that can block the pore and create comedomes. Although benzoyl peroxide is effective in preventing cellular build-up and killing P. acne, it does not increase the body's resistance to harmful bacteria. If the benzoyl peroxide treatments stop, bacteria and dead skin cells can continue to clog the pores.

How to Use Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is for the topical relief of acne-infected areas of the skin. Any other application of this ingredient can be harmful to the body and other materials. The soap version of benzoyl peroxide should be used once or twice a day. Wash the skin thoroughly before using, and then lather it on gently. Scrubbing the skin with benzoyl peroxide can cause irritation. Creams, lotions or gels are also used once or twice per day. Clean and dry the area, and then apply a small amount of benzoyl peroxide on a pad or soft cloth. It is important to rinse away the cleanser after use because benzoyl peroxide can dry the skin. Peeling and flaking can occur, so follow up the treatment with a moisturizer. Always consult your doctor, dermatologist or pharmacist before taking benzoyl peroxide and always use as directed.
