How Are Crime Scenes Investigated?

Securing the Scene

The most important aspect in a crime investigation is to secure the crime scene to protect physical evidence from further contamination and disturbance. The first officer to arrive on the scene should be aware of any people or vehicles on the scene or leaving the scene, any obvious physical evidence, and remain alert to any other intrusion.

Control the Crime Scene

The first officers to arrive on the scene must control who enters or exits. People who are potential witnesses or suspects should be processed before being allowed to leave. The number of law enforcement personnel on the scene should be limited to ensure minimal damage to the evidence.

Gathering Evidence

The investigating officers will methodically search the area for any evidence that could prove helpful in investigating the crime. Photographs are taken, the location of objects documented, and all physical evidence collected from the crime scene by officers wearing latex gloves. Physical evidence is carefully bagged and labeled to avoid damage or contamination.
