Vesicoureteral Reflux, a condition in which the urine is backed up into the ureters and into the kidneys, is often caused by urinary tract infections in children, according to the Web site wrongdiagnosis.com. They estimate that one-third of children with UTIs develop the reflux.
Ureter Development In the Womb Is Insufficient

According to the National Urological Diseases Information Clearinghouse when in the development stage in the womb the child's ureter does not grow long enough and therefore, the valve on the ureter does not properly close. This causes the child's urine to back up from the bladder into the ureters and kidneys which causes the reflux. CNN Health points to several predominant signs of the infection including a "strong, persistent urge to urinate, a burning sensation when urinating, passing frequent but small amounts of urine, blood in the urine, or a cloudy strong smelling urine sample." Fever and abdominal pain may also be experienced. If any of these symptoms or other abdominal pains are being experienced a doctor should be contacted immediately for further medical testing.

Another possibility arises when any other type of infection in the bladder causes the ureter to swell. As the ureter swells it backs urine up into the kidneys leading to reflux. Various types of infections can cause this to occur and no one infection has been pinpointed.
