Although it may seem like a complicated procedure, the process of applying dental veneers is very common and has resulted in many happy dental customers.

In order to begin the process of dental veneer application, a patient meets with a cosmetic dentist for a consultation to discuss the procedure. At this point, the dentist may be able to use computer technology to show the patient the outcome of veneer application on their teeth.
After this initial meeting, the outer enamel on the patient's teeth must be removed. This is completed through roughening the teeth and then shaping them. Roughening and shaping the teeth allow them to eventually bond more effectively with the veneer, which is applied in a thin layer over the teeth. Due to nerve endings in the teeth, local anesthesia may be used to numb the area being worked on to prevent pain.
Before the veneers are applied, the dentist must make a wax impression of the teeth. These impressions result in veneers that are custom fitted for each patient's mouth. They are made in a dental lab. Since each set of veneers is made especially for the individual, it may take some time for them to be produced. A patient may elect to have temporary veneers placed on their teeth while they are waiting for their permanent veneers in order to protect them from being damaged.

Once the personalized veneers are complete, the dentist will ensure that the veneers fit on the teeth properly and are the right shade. It is possible to further customize the veneers during this period through additional shaping and trimming. Veneers are attached to the tooth using special cement formulated for this process. This cement is hardened by a beam of light, activating the bond between the veneer and the tooth. Once applied, veneers can no longer be adjusted for size or color, so it is important for patients to work with their dentist to ensure they are happy with their veneers before this step. Although they do require periodic maintenance by a dentist, veneers can last for many years.
