Determining the Goal of Recycling Your Computer

It makes sense to recycle your old computer instead of just throwing it away. It's also the responsible thing to do. How you decide to recycle your computer will depend on why you are recycling it. The options for recycling an old computer that still works are different from those for recycling a hopelessly out-of-date or broken computer.

A New Computer is the Goal

There are many places such as churches and nonprofit organizations that can offer a tax deduction for the donation of your working computer. If you are simply staying on the cutting edge of technology and want to pass your older computer on to another owner, consider donating it to a worthy organization, thus 'recycling' your used computer.

An Older Computer Thats Slow

If the computer in question is simply out of date and needs an overhaul, but cannot be passed onto to someone for use, then consider giving it to a business that earns money by making 'new' computers from used parts and components. This is a legitimate option for recycling your old computer.

A Crashed Computer

Find a reputable recycler if your old computer is useless. The recycler must dispose of the harmful toxins, heavy metals and carcinogens according to EPA regulations. Ask questions, and if the answers are vague or troublesome, look for another recycler. Many of the companies that sell computers also have 'take back' programs you can use. When discarding any computer, make sure to clean all personal information from its hard drive before relinquishing it.
