Spring scales are carefully calibrated to give the weight or mass of objects under specific circumstances. If the spring scale is not held in the proper position, the reading will be off. Spring scales must also be used on earth to give a proper reading, as opposed to a balance scale which will give an accurate reading on any planet or moon. The best way to use a spring scale is to hang the scale and let the weight hang directly below the scale without swinging.
Scale on an incline

If the weight and the scale are resting on an incline of any kind, the reading will be less than it ought to be. Friction of the surface against the object will reduce the amount of force the spring scale needs to lift the object. Even if the surface is frictionless, if the weight is not pulling straight down, the scale does not need to provide as much force and the reading will be less than it ought to be.

If the string attaching the object to the scale goes over a single pulley and the object is hanging freely, then the angle of the spring scale does not matter. As long as the object hangs straight down, the scale will give a good reading.
