- Recognizing the symptoms of bipolar disorder can prevent a family crisis. Bipolar disorder is characterized by extreme shifts in mood that can contribute to conflict in relationships, financial instability, marital affairs, raging behavior and substance abuse. Identifying the warning signs that a mood shift may be happening in a family member with bipolar disorder is helpful for seeking preventative measures prior to the mood episode reaching its peak.
- Supporting a family member with bipolar disorder often includes encouraging ongoing treatment and compliance with medications. Periods of instability are typical with bipolar disorder and may include brief hospitalization to stabilize medications and ongoing follow-up with an outpatient provider.
- Participating in family counseling, group therapy or other networks increases support for families affected by bipolar disorder. There are skilled professionals who can provide education, referrals and psychotherapy for family members affected by the disorder. There are several on-line resources and forums as well that can be a source of comfort (see Resources).

on 9/16/2009 I'd also recommend family support groups and eduction programs such as those offered by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). They offer support from other families, coping strategies and education about mental illnesses. http://www.nami.org/Template.cfm?Section=Family-to-Family&lstid=605
