  1. A wireless fence is a relatively inexpensive way to achieve the same end as a regular barrier fence. The term "wireless fence" is a misnomer actually as the fence is made operative by a wire, just not the type of wire that is normally associated with a fence.
  2. Wireless Fence

  3. A wireless fence works by sending a signal to a collar on your pet which gives a small and harmless electrical charge whenever the pet comes closer than a predetermined distance to your wireless barrier. To facilitate this, a small gauge wire is buried 6 inches around the perimeter of the yard or area where the pet is allowed to roam. Both ends of the perimeter wire are then connected to an electronic server which is plugged via a transformer into a mains power socket.
  4. Safe Perimeter

  5. The small receiver box is attached via an adjustable collar to your pet and can be placed so as not to interfere with the pet's normal routines. When the pet goes too close to the perimeter of the area you have marked the device on the collar will activate the main server which activates a battery in the collar module to discharge a preset low voltage shock to the pet, stopping it from proceeding any further. The pet's natural reaction to the small shock will be to retrace its steps to avoid the shock. The instructions on the package will advise that it will take your pet several times to learn where not to go near the perimeter. However most dogs have only had to be shocked once and they never go near the perimeter again.

This process may seem cruel however, the transformer ensures that the shock administered is very small and the pet will learn not to venture near the perimeter very quickly. This is a very cost effective way to ensure the safety of your pets however experience has shown that there are some precautionary steps should be taken. Make sure the connection to your mains power supply is grounded to Earth, especially if your area is prone to electrical storms. An ungrounded wire could attract a lightning bolt into your main supply and damage your house.
  8. Owner Concerns

  9. For concerned pet owners, the wireless fence does not administer the shock from the mains power supply, as this would raise concerns of accidental malfunctions. There is a small battery within the collar module which supplies the 1.5V shock, which is more than enough to modify the pet's behavior.
