Removing Automatic Shift Knobs on Volkswagens

  1. The Components

    • Automatic shift knobs in Volkswagens are comprised of two pieces: the shift knob, and the retaining ring. The shift knob is a handle that is either spherical or oblong (depending on the model) and slides over the shaft of the shifter. The retaining ring is attached at the bottom of the shift knob and holds the knob in place, preventing it from rotating on the shaft.

    The Tools Involved

    • The retaining clip can be removed by hand. However, it may be easier to use a cloth or some other material that will help you get a better grip on the retaining ring.

    Removing The Ring Tab

    • Remove the clip by grabbing the retaining ring with one hand and grabbing the shift knob with the other. You will need to push down on the ring with a lot of force, but it will pop off the base of the shift knob. If you are having trouble, try gently twisting the retaining ring back and forth while you are pushing down on it.

    Removing the Shift Knob

    • Pull up on the shift knob once the ring tab is off. The shift knob will slide off semi-easily because there is nothing holding the knob in place now. You may have to twist the knob back and forth while pulling up on it as the knob sits tightly over the shaft. Once you've removed the shift knob, slide the retaining ring off the shaft (this should be very loose around the shaft of the shifter).
