    • Sleep deprivation adversely affects people of all ages, though adults may suffer the worst consequences because they tend to go longer with inadequate sleep. Aside from the moodiness and irritability that adults tend to exhibit when they are sleep deprived, they may also experience bouts of memory loss, which can add to underlying frustrations and angst. Adults may also find that they are unable to complete routine tasks, communicate effectively or maintain a normal level of alertness. All of these inadequacies can lead one to become angry, sad, frustrated or withdrawn. In other words, not only can a lack of sleep lead to behavioral and emotional problems, but their effects may cause people to perform sub-optimally, exacerbating these feelings.

    In Children

    • Children experience much more significant behavioral problems when they lack sleep than adults do. According to SleepDex.org, children who regularly do not receive the recommended eight hours of sleep at night may experience a great change in mood, behavior and academic performance. The organization also notes that these children may become depressed and are more likely to have a negative self-image. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), poor social skills and difficulty learning normal tasks may all occur if a child receives an insufficient amount of sleep.

    In Teenagers

    • Like children, teenagers who are sleep deprived may experience ADHD and depression. They may also, according to the American Psychological Association, have difficulties controlling their emotions, temperaments, feelings, impulses and decision-making abilities. This can lead to risky behavior, such as alcohol and drug use, irresponsible sexual activities and driving while impaired--even if that impairment is simply a lack of sleep.
