Cleaning an Oil Furnace Filter
-
Basics
-
An oil furnace filter is used to keep debris from making its way from the home back into the system. In some instances this filter is disposable and can just be replaced, but sometimes they are reusable. If this is the case, it can be cleaned. Either way, the filter has to be accessed and removed so that a clean one can be put in. This needs to be done at least once a year or more often depending on the type of filter, and if nothing else should at least be checked regularly.
Finding the Filter
-
Before locating the filter, remember the most important detail: turn off the furnace and close the valve that feeds the furnace with fuel. If this isn't done, you will put yourself at risk for injury. Once the furnace is off, remove the filter housing to create access to the filter. The filter simply slides out of the slot that it is in, and at this point, it can be cleaned or replaced.

Cleaning the Filter
-
To clean a filter, first establish that it is not disposable. Disposables are framed with cardboard. If the filter is reusable, simply take the filter to a sink and rinse with water until the dust washes away. Gently rub the filter to aid in the process. If the sink isn't large enough, take the filter outside and rinse it with a hose. Let the filter dry completely before placing it back in the furnace. Once back in, replace the filter housing and turn the valve to let the fuel back into the furnace.
