    Wireless Networking

  1. A wireless router is used to create a wireless network within a home, office, or other location that needs Internet access without the use of Ethernet cables. While wireless routers can be used to create a wired network as well, they are most often purchased to take advantage of the radio frequency signals that they produce to allow wireless connections for desktops, laptops and other wireless Internet-capable devices. The wireless router's setup software should include a wizard for helping you to create a wireless network that your devices can connect to; a setup wizard will most likely be included in order to simplify the process as much as possible. Once a wireless network is set up, security features, such as encrypted security keys, can be created as well in order to secure the network and prevent unauthorized access.
  2. Laptop Wireless Capabilities

  3. The majority of modern laptop computers are designed with the intention of having a wireless network connection being their main source of network and Internet access. Even older laptops, or those which have not been equipped with a wireless Internet connection receiver, are still able to make use of a wireless home or business network by using a wireless card which plugs into the computer's expansion card slot. Though the strength of the signal received by a laptop will depend on factors such as the power of the transmitter, the type of receiving card being used, and the distance the laptop is from the wireless router, even a relatively weak wireless signal can be used to access network assets as well as the Internet.
  4. Using a Wireless Connection

  5. When a wireless-enabled laptop detects a signal from a wireless router, the option becomes available to connect to that signal or any others that may be available at that time. If the wireless network has been secured with an encrypted security key or a password, that information will have to be correctly entered before the laptop will be able to fully establish its connection. The security key and any other network information can be stored on the laptop itself, allowing it to automatically connect to that specific network whenever it is detected; this means that you'll only have to enter in your security information one time in order to be able to use the wireless network that you've set up. So long as the security key and other network information remains unchanged, the laptop will have access to both the network and the Internet so long as it can detect the router's wireless signal.
