How Does the Navy Tuition Reimbursement Program Work?
  1. Eligibility

    • In order to get tuition assistance from the Navy, the person, the school and the courses must all be eligible for the tuition assistance program. An individual in the Navy is eligible for tuition assistance if he is on active duty and will be for the duration of the classes that he wishes to take. An officer must agree that he will stay on active duty for two years after receiving tuition assistance. Any individual wishing to apply for tuition assistance must have reimbursed the Navy for any previous courses for which they received assistance but did not pass. In order to be eligible for tuition reimbursement and to determine the schools and courses eligible for tuition assistance, you must speak to your Navy College Office.

    Application

    • When you have determined that you and the courses you will be taking qualify for tuition assistance, you must fill out an application. The proper form on which to file a request for tuition assistance is form number NETPDTC 1560/3. You will be required to list on the application form the courses you wish to take and the amount of tuition that will be needed. Tuition assistance may only be used to pay tuition and mandatory enrollment fees. Your completed application must be signed by your commander and then submitted to the Navy College Office.

    Restrictions

    • The tuition assistance program will not pay tuition amounts exceeding $250 per credit hour, $166.67 per quarter hour or $16.67 per clock hour. Only 16 credit hours per year are eligible for tuition assistance. Tuition assistance does not cover the cost of books, flight training, courses taken as part of an officer ascension program or a course already paid for via tuition assistance. Tuition assistance may not be requested for any classes for which the drop add period has ended.

    Reimbursement

    • The Navy tuition assistance program is unique in that, rather than reimbursing successful students, the Navy program pays tuition for classes when student's enroll. You will, however, be required to reimburse the Navy if certain conditions are not met. You must pay back any tuition assistance you received to attend a class that you fail or receive an "Incomplete." If you withdraw from a course, you must reimburse the Navy for any nonrefundable course enrollment fees. Future requests for tuition assistance will be denied until any reimbursement due to the Navy is paid.
