How Does DVI Cable Work?

  1. DVI-A Cable

    • The DVI-A cable, also known as high-resolution analog cable, allows a DVI-equipped video card to connect to an analog display, such as a CRT monitor. Though the picture quality and refresh rate may not be as high as the pure digital signal transferred through a DVI-D cable, a DVI-A cable allows a wider range of monitors to be used with a DVI video card. A DVI-A cable has a DVI connection on one end and a VGA connection on the other. The cable itself acts as a converter for the digital signal that is produced by the DVI video card.

    DVI-I Cable

    • The DVI-I cable, also known as an integrated DVI cable, is capable of transmitting both a true digital signal and a high-resolution analog signal so that it can be used regardless of the type of monitor that you have. The majority of DVI-I cables have a male DVI connection on one end and a female DVI connection on the other. This allows you to attach a DVI-D or DVI-A cable to the DVI-I (or an adapter with the appropriate connections) so that the cable will connect to both your video card and either a DVI or VGA monitor. When connecting a DVI-I cable to another DVI cable, it is important to remember that the strength of a digital video signal can begin to break down after 16 feet, so the overall cable length should be taken into consideration.
