How Does a Babysitter Spend a Workday?
  1. Childcare

    • The main part of any babysitter's workday is going to be spent doing actual hands on childcare. Childcare for a babysitter can consist of many tasks, including keeping the child entertained, cleaning up, maintaining a safe environment, transporting the children to and from activities, disciplining the child within parental guidelines and putting the child to sleep. These duties can vary depending on the parental requests, the amount of children being watched, the time of day the babysitting is occurring and how long the children are being watched.

    Cooking

    • A babysitter may also spend some of the workday cooking. This may be as simple as microwaving basic food, or preparing a couple of snacks. However, some employers may also ask babysitters to prepare a full meal for the children while the parents are gone.

    Cleaning

    • A babysitter may also spend much of the workday cleaning. Taking care of a child also comes with cleaning up after a child. This means a babysitter may be required to clean any dishes that have been dirtied during meal time, help clean up toys or messes from other activities and cleaning up any spills or accidents that may occur while on the job.

    Training

    • Part of a babysitter's workday may also include training. A babysitter is in charge of the safety of the child they are watching while their parents are away from the home. As such, a babysitter must be prepared for any emergency that could occur. This is why many employers request or require that their babysitter have at least basic CPR/First Aid Certification. Other classes such as child care basics and child development courses may also be beneficial in a career as a babysitter.

    Promotion

    • Babysitting in essence is a small business. Like all businesses, promotion must occur to obtain clients. As such, babysitters may also spend part of their work day obtaining new clients by posting ads, putting up fliers, or encouraging the use of their services through word of mouth.
