How Does the Angular Contact Bearing Work?

  1. About Angular Contact Bearings

    • A ball bearing is an engineering device that reduces friction. Ball bearings are comprised of smooth metal balls between smooth metal services--usually circular--that enable items that would normally slide (causing more slowing friction) to roll instead, greatly reducing friction and thus increasing speed and efficiency. Ball bearings are used to handle either radial loads (such as a motor) or thrust loads (such as a person sitting on a swivel chair).

An angular contact bearing is a type of ball bearing. Angular contact bearings can handle a combined radial and axial load, such as a bicycle (moving wheels supporting a person) or a car (moving wheels supporting a car frame and passengers).

How an Angular Contact Bearing Works

    • The races (metal surfaces between the bearing balls) and bearing balls of an angular contact bearing are installed at an angle, typically of either 15, 30 or 40 degrees, relative to the bearing's operating axis. This design enables the bearings to handle loads with both a radial and axial component. Angular contact bearings greatly reduce the tremendous amount of friction caused by a radial-axial load combinations. For example, angular contact bearings enable vehicle motors to run smoothly and quietly while carrying the car frame and passengers overhead.

    Angular Contact Bearing Applications

    • Angular contact bearings are widely used in heavy industry, such as manufacturing, chemical or agricultural, because of their ability to enable the operation of heavy equipment. These bearings are used widely in turbines, heavy transportation equipment such as airplanes, and can even be incorporated into the design of earthquate-proof buildings.
