How Forklifts Work

Introduction

A forklift is powerful industrial truck that is used to lift heavy objects and transport materials. Forklifts can be found in warehouses and construction sites, and are essential in moving large and heavy objects from place to place. Forklifts allow you to move objects more safely and help prevent accidents from happening. Operators drive forklifts backwards because the objects are carried on the front of the forklift, blocking the operator's view. This is also why the steering wheels are the rear wheels.

Function

A forklift has two forks that are located on the front of the machine. These two forks only move up and down, but they can also tilt upward and downward. The operator controls these movements, and uses a hydraulic system to move the forks. The hydraulic system applies pressure to a bar with rolling chains that is located in the forklift. The type of forklift you are using will dictate what kind of fuel source it needs for its power. Forklifts can get their power from many different sources, including electricity, gasoline, diesel or propane.

Because forklifts are heavy machines, they can be very dangerous for the operator and those around him. Forklifts are so heavy that the brakes do not cause them to stop right away. There are weights that are placed on the back of the machine that act as a counterbalance when then forks are in use. As an operator, you need to be aware of the people and items around you. It is imperative that you don't allow anyone to stand under a forklift when the forks are raised and loaded. When a forklift is in motion, the load being carried on the forks can fall or be knocked off.
