Troubleshooting an Electric Generator
-
Power Levels
-
In simple terms, the forward power of a generator is the machine's capacity. Its reflected power is the actual juice it provides. You can gauge the powers levels by the meters on the generator itself. If the reflected power of an electric generator does not match its forward power, then it is not functioning properly. This indicates an electrical problem in the generator, and you should consult an electrician.
Displays
-
If the lights and displays on an electric generator are not turning on, try these two steps before contacting service. First, be sure the circuit breaker on the back of the generator is in the "Up" or "On" position. Second, use a voltage meter to test whether or not the generator is getting AC power. If both these actions fail to turn on lights and displays, then more diagnostic will be needed.

The Engine
-
If the engine stops working as soon as you release the "Start" button, it is likely the connection between the generator's voltage regular and control board is not working. Test the connection with a power meter that features a diode check function. Simply plug the meter into the connection on the back of the voltage regulator. If it is not showing that it is getting any power, then the control board has stopped functioning. It will have to be replaced by an electrician or technician.
