A stump grinder is a large machine that has a vertically aligned blade with large metal teeth shaped like a saw. The blade is attached to a machine arm that is mounted to another machine like a bob cat, ATV or tractor. When the machine is turned on, the blade rotates very fast. The arm is then positioned over the stump and moved back and forth across it. It chews up the stump, mulching it into fine saw dust as it makes a pass. On the next pass, the arm is lowered a half an inch, and it passes across the stump again. It does this until the stump is ground down.
Attaching to a Bobcat

A stump grinding machine is rather large so it can be attached to a bob cat or all terrain vehicle, or ATV. This way the stump grinder can be transported to the stump and grind several in an afternoon. The grinder arm is attached by a mounting bracket onto the frame of the bob cat or ATV.

Arm and Motor

The stump grinder is powered by a motor. Some advanced grinders have hydraulic motors that can be attached to a tractor or bobcat motor. Most stump grinders are simply attached to the front end of the bobcat or tractor. The bobcat and tractor is then moved to push the grinder across the stump.The grinder is moved up and down by the bobcat blade. This is the most common type of stump grinder. Larger versions are built just for stump grinding, and these typically have tracks and a very large grinding blade.
