How Does a DSL Filter Work?
  1. DSL Definition

    • Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is a continuous, high-speed, multiple frequency Internet connection that is delivered by an Internet service provider through existing copper pair phone lines, a DSL modem and special micro-filters. Types of DSL include Asymmetric (ADSL), Symmetric (SDSL), IDSL/ISDN and Rate Adaptive (RSDL).

    How a DSL Filter Wors

    • A DSL filter is a small plastic "box" that has one or more RJ11 (telephone) connectors. A DSL filter splits the frequencies in phone lines into two bands--the higher band (25 kHz and above) is reserved for data (Internet), and the lower band (below 4 kHz) is reserved for voice (telephone). Once installed, a DSL filter allows you to maintain an Internet connection and use a telephone, fax machine or answering machine at the same time.

    Splitter

    • Most Internet service providers use subscriber-installed "splitter" type micro-filters with its DSL service. These splitters allow the user to plug a telephone and DSL modem into the same telephone line. One end of the splitter has an RJ11 connector/lead which is plugged into the wall jack, and the other end has a connector marked "Voice" or "Phone" and one marked "DSL" or "Data." A basic DSL filter only contains one phone connector and a wall jack lead.

    Getting DSL Filters

    • A typical DSL modem

After you set up an account with an Internet service provider, like AT&T for example, the company will send you an installation kit that contains a DSL modem, five or more filters/splitters, cables, instruction manuals and a software CD. Additional DSL filters or splitters can be purchased from local outlets like Radio Shack, on through an online retailer.

    Installation

    • Installing a DSL filter is a simple process, but first read through the instructions that came with your ISP installation kit. To install a DSL filter, unplug the telephone line from the telephone wall jack, insert the filter into the jack, then plug the telephone line into the "Phone" or "Voice" side of the filter. Every telephone, fax and answering machine being used requires a separate DSL filter.
