How Does a Ratchet Strap Work?

A rachet strap is an important tool that is used to transport heavy objects on top of a vehicle. The object can be wrapped very tightly with the strap because of the ratchet mechanism. The strap usually secures the object to a platform on the vehicle's roof, and many ratchet straps can hold thousands of pounds. Although a ratchet strap can seem complex, it is surprisingly simple once you learn how to use it.

To use a ratchet strap, first place the heavy object on the roof platform. Then, wrap the strap around the object and the top bars of the platform. (Some ratchet straps come with hooks; these hooks fit into the holes on the platform.) Make sure there are no twists in the strap. Thread the strap through the drum of the latch, and pull to tighten. Make sure that there is enough slack at this point to fit your fist between the strap and the object. Next, "ratchet" the crank, or move the it back and forth to tighten the strap.

To loosen the ratchet strap, grip the center latch so that it is pulled towards the crank handle while rotating the handle 180 degrees. You should hear it lock in place as it opens. Pull the entire handle toward you to begin to loosen the strap. You should then be able to pull the rest of the strap out of the handle easily.
