    Bungee Composition

  1. A bungee cord is a great invention. It can secure just about anything due to the materials it is made of. Most bungee cords are made from a stretchy rubber that is better known as a rubber band. This rubber band material is more durable than a typical rubber band you'd use to hold together a file. It is denser, has a lot of snap and can withstand a lot of pulling force.
  2. Bungee Exterior

  3. The more impressive part of the bungee cord may be the exterior, which is wrapped around the springy rubber inside. This material is a woven polyester fiber. It has a criss-crossed hatch weave that makes it very durable but allows it to spread apart as well. As the bungee is stretched, the weaved material, which is shaped like a tube, expands, too. The interlocked fibers stretch apart just a little, still providing ample protection for the rubber underneath, and helping to add strength to the cord.
  4. Hooks and More

  5. A bungee cord also has hooks that can be fastened to just about anything, like a car fender or a door knob. These hooks are made of metal that is bent around a form, then twisted in the opposite direction to form a coil. This tightly wound coil is just wide enough to allow part of the bungee cord through. The cord is then folded over and clamped with a metal wire so it will not pull through the coil. When the cord is stretched the hooks stay in place because the cord is not able to be pulled through the coil wire ends.
