How Do Digital Scales Work?

  1. Introduction to Scales

    • Digital scales project your weight onto an LCD screen. Unlike an analog scale, which uses springs to determine the gravitational pull on an object, a digital scale is made up of more complex systems of load cells and strain gauges. The load cells and strain gauges work together to measure the gravitational pull and weight of the person standing on the scale.

    Load Cells

    • When you step on a digital scale, the pressure from your body is dispersed onto a set of sensors inside the scale. When you step on the scale, these sensors, called load cells, move. The load cell is a kind of balance beam, meaning one side is unsupported. This is the side that will fall as more weight is placed on the load cell.

    Strain Gauges

    • As the balance beam side of the load cell falls, it hits a sensor called a strain gauge. The strain gauge is a piece of foil which is sensitive to any bends or flexing. The pressure against the strain gauge then causes the gauge to create a signal, which is converted into a digital signal shown on the LCD.
