Installing an Electric Range Top
-
Prepare The Opening
-
Cut or otherwise prepare the countertop opening in the dimensions outlined in the product manufacturer's specifications for your range model. Make sure that the countertop surface surrounding the range is smooth, level and free of any uneven protrusions or debris. If mounting the range onto a tile countertop, there may be grout line crenelations, but as long as they are uniform around the opening this is fine.
Set In Unit
-
Dry fit the range into the opening and check for fit and level. Also confirm that the electrical cord easily reaches the electrical outlet without tugging and with at least a small amount of slack. Remove the range, set it aside nearby and lay down a fine bead of silicone caulking on the top of the countertop following closely along the cut opening. Put the range unit back in place and seat onto the caulking. Check the range for level and plumb. If your range unit comes with undermount clips, you can secure those now as well.

Make Electrical Connections
-
If you had an electric range previously in the same or nearby position, you already have 220-volt outlet in your kitchen. A 220-volt outlet takes the larger three-prong plug and will usually be labeled as "Range" on a double-width breaker switch in your circuit breaker panel. If this is the case, you can simply plug the new range unit's three-prong plug into the 220 outlet. Allow caulking to set before placing any pans or weight onto the range. If there was a gas range previously installed in your kitchen or you cannot locate a 220-volt outlet, it is time to call in a professional electrician to bring in a 220-volt line from your junction box to the new range as this is aspect is not a do-it-yourself job.
