A nanny camera, also known as a nanny cam, is a hidden video camera normally installed within a common household object. The nanny cam, used to conduct surveillance, typically is composed of a board camera, which is a miniature camera that has a lens mounted onto a circuit board. Nanny cams run off of battery and electrical wiring. Nanny cams disguised as common household objects that run off of an electrical cord, such as an alarm clock or clock radio, are powered by the electrical cord. Nanny cams disguised as objects without cords, such as a teddy bear, are powered by batteries.

Most nanny cams do not record onto themselves, so a recording medium is required. A nanny cam can be wired by connecting it to a DVR or VCR using a cable. Additionally, some wireless nanny cams transmit a signal to a receiver that is connected to the DVR or VCR. Nanny cams also are able to send the video feed to the user's computer or cell phone, which allows parents to access the footage the cameras are capturing. Some of the more advanced nanny cams come equipped with motion sensors. Additionally, nanny cams also record in black and white and color.

The ideal nanny cams are those that can be moved around the house without drawing attention to the placement of the object.
