How Does a Digitizing Tablet Work?
-
Defining Digitizing
-
Digitizing, or digital representation, is the use of a set of preordained points to represent an object, image, sound, or document in digital format. The tablet combined with a pen or stylus serves as the means to enter the data into a computer. Tablet and stylus are input devices just like a keyboard or mouse. The mechanism for sending the data is found in the tablet but the stylus plays a large roll in what is recorded. Not only are the coordinates noted through the tablet but the angle, the pressure and the distance of the stylus can have an affect on what appears on the monitor. The stylus transmits signals that the tablet identifies through coordinates and then transmits when plugged into the computer.
Using A Digitizing Tablet
-
All types of information can be entered using a digitizing tablet. Many types of software applications incorporate the use of a digitizing tablet---drawing or graphics software, drafting software, embroidery and garment software, GIS (geographical information systems) programs for map making and text based programs that transfer handwritten notes into a document. Digitizing tablets can also interface with manufacturing processes.
Coordinating Data
-
The tablet can be used directly as a drawing surface, just as an artist would use a pencil or charcoal on paper. It can also be used to enter data whereby a map (or grid) placed and anchored onto the tablet can record the stylus as it places pressure points across the map. These pressure points create X,Y coordinates. Proper registration of the map or grid against the tablet's coordinate system is necessary for the information to show up in the computer correctly.
Accuracy of Digitizing Tablets
-
Each point on a digitizing tablet is created to represent a matching point on its display screen. The tablets are static and not dynamic. This characteristic makes them wonderful tools for tracing when used with another type of input device called a puck. Digitizing tablets and tools have also been incorporated into medical devices used for surgeries and biopsies. Digitizers are usually noted with an accuracy rating. Potential accuracy problems with a tablet or pen can be noted using standard diagnostics testing tools that are generally included with digitizing tablets and software.
Tablet Characteristics
-
Tablets can be rigid or flexible depending upon the products parameters. Flexible tablets can be rolled up and carried or stored making them a must have for uses requiring portability and on-site application. Newer tablets are being designed to include room for the use of a mouse and a stylus at the same time. The incorporation of navigational keys allowing the use of both hands simultaneously is also a new feature.
