  1. Installing a wireless router outdoors, in order to support a wireless network in your home or outside of your home, is a simple task. The most difficult part of the task is finding a secure location and choosing a router specifically made for the installation outdoors. Once installed, a wireless router allows all users in the immediate area access to the Internet and all devices on the network.
  2. Routers that are created specifically for outdoor use often have longer ranges than indoor routers. They are also more physically robust, water and wind-resistant, and less sensitive to temperature fluctuations. Outdoor wireless routers are also more expensive due to these features.
  3. When installing a wireless router outdoors, it is important to find the best location for the router. This entails not only providing the best Internet access for all users, but also protecting the router from weather conditions as much as possible.
  4. In order for the router to provide the best signal to all areas, it is best to install the wireless router in a location where the largest possible area is served. Locating the router in the center of the area you want to provide access to is the best way to accomplish this. Keep in mind that the closer you are to the router, the faster speeds you will get.
  5. Try to make sure that your router is located in as sheltered an area as possible. While outdoor wireless routers are robust, they are not entirely water and weatherproof. It is important to take outdoor conditions into consideration when choosing a location for your router.
  6. Installation of an outdoor wireless router is similar to installation of indoor wireless routers. Simply plug the router into a power outlet and power it on, as you connect it to your Internet connection. You will need to choose a name for your home network. This name is your Service Set Identifier, or SSID. Enter your SSID into the router configuration screen, and follow the installation instructions specific to your router. These instructions will allow you to enable the firewall and other security features, including a password for your network.
