How Does Wireless Internet Access Work?
-
What is Wireless Internet Access?
-
Wireless Internet access allows you to browse the Internet without having a connection using cables. You connect using a wireless card that can be installed in your computer. You may purchase a USB wireless card that would connect to your computer through the USB port. A USB card is easy to install since it simply plugs in the computer. A wireless connection is more popular and less time consuming to install than a wired connection. Some cell phones and PDAs are also equipped with wireless capability that allows you to browse the Internet. Wireless allows you the convenience of being connected and the ability to work while on the go.
What is Required for a Wireless Connection?
-
If you have a home wireless connection, you will need to have a computer that is set up as the main computer. You are also able to create a network of more than one computer. If you choose to create a connection to more than one computer so that they can connect to the wireless access, the computers will need to have network cards installed. These cards will allow them to communicate with one another. Some connections can also be set up using a wireless router that would provide additional security to your network. This will keep hackers from attacking your computer while surfing the Internet. A router enables you to connect several computers to use one Internet connection. Many ISPs provide the routers at minimal or no cost to the user once you purchase Internet service through them.

How is a Wireless Connection Set Up?
-
In order to set up your connection, you will have to install the software that came with your wireless card to configure its settings. Once the software is installed, the next step is to insert the wireless card that you are using for your computer. If you are sharing your connection, you can choose to make your connection public. In doing this, you must also disable wireless security on your network. If you choose to do this, anyone within your range can access your signal and connect to the Internet using your connection. To prevent public access, you must enable wireless security and create a logon name and password. Once you have completed installing your wireless card software, you can connect using your card.
How is Wireless Access Acquired?
-
If your connection is wireless, you are using a device that has a transceiver that receives the signal and relays it to your PC. If you are using a wireless router to transmit these signals, you would need to configure the router to connect to your PC. The router would transmit signals to your PC through the Ethernet card installed inside of your PC. The Ethernet card allows the devices to communicate with one another wirelessly so that a hardware cable connection isn't required. Some cellular phones also offer users a wireless connection. Your service provider has broadcast towers that transmit and receive the wireless signals. Your cell phone uses these towers to connect to the Internet wirelessly.
