How Does Enbrel Work?

  1. Function

    • Enbrel is injected just under your skin by either yourself or someone else. Enbrel works by decreasing a certain protein produced by your immune system. This protein is called a tumor necrosis factor blocker, because it blocks your body from making tumor necrosis factor. Tumor necrosis factor is created in your immune system, and when you produce too much of this protein, it causes rheumatoid arthritis.

    Warning

    • According to WebMd.com, there are multiple side effects that are associated with Enbrel that you should be aware of before injecting the drug. Side effects can be caused by the Enbrel pre-filled syringes or the drug itself. Around the injection site, you should be aware of any redness, swelling, itching or bruising. Possible allergic reactions include a rash, hives, trouble breathing and swelling of the face, lips or tongue. Side effects from Enbrel can include seizures, vision problems, tiredness and weakness.
