How Does Drontal Work?

Veterinarians use and prescribe Bayer Health Care's Drontal® Plus as a dewormer and a defense against worms and parasites. In addition, the regular use of the medicine by dog and cat owners reduces the risk of "zoonetric" (capable of being transmitted to humans) parasite transmission.

Eliminate Tapeworms

Drontal contains praziquantel, pyrantel embonate and febantel, each of which destroys tapeworms, hookworms, roundworms and whipworms.

Praziquantel eliminates both mature and immature tapeworms. Within seconds of contacting a tapeworm, the chemical begins destroying the parasite's "tegument" (outer covering). At the same time, the tapeworm absorbs Ca+2Ions, causing its body (strobila) to contract and reducing its glucose intake. Reduced glucose intake accelerates the parasite's loss of energy reserves, leading to death.

Pyrantel and febantel work in synergy to eliminate more worms than either could by working alone. In this case, the chemicals kill by sending the parasites into spastic paralysis.

Dose and Cautions

Drontal comes in two forms, tablets and beef-flavored "Taste Tabs®." The dewormer requires only a single dose. The drug is restricted to use by licensed veterinarians and by prescription.

Do not give Drontal Plus to pregnant animals, to dogs weighing less than 2 pounds or puppies younger than three weeks old.
