How Does a Strap Wrench Work?

  1. Description

    • Most modern strap wrenches consist of a plastic handle with a rubber strap running through it. The handle has an opening in it that allows the strap to thread through the handle once, loop around and then re-enter the handle. Along the strap are small ridges that keep the strap in place once it is tightened.

    Uses

    • The strap wrench is ideal for removing shower heads, sink faucets, pipes and other objects that twist off. It can even be used to twist off jar lids! Its advantages over other types of wrenches is its versatility and flexibility, as well as its ability to do the job without scratching delicate surfaces. It is easy to use and requires very little muscle strength.

    Operation

    • To use a strap wrench, you simply place the strap loop around the object you want to remove. Then you pull the strap through the handle until it fits snugly around the object; one of the ridges will keep it in place. You can then turn the wrench, and the object should twist off easily due to the friction of the rubber strap. If the strap slips, you can simply loosen it and begin again.
