The materials used in making gasoline engines need to have a combination of strength and functionality in order to withstand the constant use. One common material used in gasoline engines is silicon nitride, a type of ceramic metal that is often used in devices that are prone to high friction. In addition to this quality, silicon nitride has the ability to resist shock and is lighter and more durable than most metals, making it quite ideal in the manufacturing of gasoline engines. For engines that do not undergo heavy use, metals such as steel are also used in making gasoline engines.

Commercially made engines are usually manufactured in factories on automatic assembly lines. The backbone to making a gasoline engine is the assembly of the cylinder, which contains the piston. The number of cylinders can range from singular to several. In fact, most cars available in the market today make use of eight cylinders. For gasoline engines that make use of more than one cylinder, they need to be arranged in a particular way. In an inline, the cylinders are placed in a single file in one bank. On the other hand, a "V" type of arrangement has the cylinders arranged in an angle to one another in two banks. Finally, the cylinders are placed in two banks opposite to each other in a flat.
Quality Control

Ensuring the quality of the manufactured gasoline engine makes up an important step in how they are made. During production, all the parts and components that go in the device are checked to guarantee that they have the right dimensions and are built properly. One of the most important steps in checking for quality is looking for cracks in the material used in the gasoline engine parts. The reason for this is that the presence of damage can potentially cause serious impairment in performance later on.
