  1. Using a cable modem is one of the most popular ways to set up a home network. It allows you the ability to surf the internet as long as you are in range of the modem. The modem sends signals to your computer in order for you to have an Internet connection. A wireless cable modem allows users to have a high-speed Internet connection without the use of cables. In addition, users are able to include a router with this setup to create a secure connection. The router allows two or more computers to share an Internet connection. When this connection is shared, the computers can be physically placed in different locations.
  2. Benefits and drawbacks of cable wireless modems

  3. Cable providers boast that users can receive faster speeds than DSL users. Cable modems provide users with speeds of 30 Mbps, unlike DSL users, who receive speeds of 10 Mbps. Since cable modem users are connecting to the internet using the service provider's network, they are sharing a network with other users. This can slow down your services if many users in your area are accessing the Internet at the same time. Service providers may also put limitations on the bandwidth of their service from time to time. The explanation for this is that the providers wish to accommodate more customers. These limitations set can reduce your Internet speed from 30 mbps to almost 3 mbps. Another drawback to using cable modems is that if the service provider is having problems with the network, it could affect a home user's Internet connection.
  4. Establishing an internet connection

  5. Once your cable modem is connected to your PC, the first step to connecting your cable connection is to set up your router. Your router must be connected to your modem and configured. Opening a web browser and typing the IP address of your router allows you to configure it. Once you have set up the router, you can name your network and create administrative passwords. An network icon is displayed in the bottom right hand corner of your PC. Right-clicking and choosing "view available wireless networks" on the sub menu displays all the networks that you can connect to. Choose your network name and then "Connect." The modem works to establish a connection to the Internet.
