Removing Previous Java Installations

Before installing or reinstalling Java, it's important to remove any previous installations. To do so, click "Start," then click "Control Panel." Double-click "Add or Remove Programs." In the list of installed programs, look for either "Java" or "Sun Java." If you find one or more instances of Java in the list, click each one and click "Remove." Confirm the removal, if asked to do so. If you removed any previous Java installations, reboot your computer.

Downloading Java

To download the latest Java version, visit the Sun Java website (see Resources), then click the prominent download link. Your download should start automatically. If it doesn't, click the provided link. Java will detect your XP installation automatically. Windows XP and later Windows versions use the same installation file. If downloading on a non-Windows machine (Mac OS X or Linux), obtain the proper installation file under the "Not the right operating system?" section. Save the file to your hard drive.

Installing the Latest Version of Java

Before you install, make sure to close any open Web browsers. A good way to make sure all instances of browser software are closed is to reboot your computer. Once you've made sure you don't have any browsers running, double-click the downloaded installation file and follow the on-screen prompts to install Java.
