How Does a Soldering Iron Work?
  1. Traditional vs. Cold Heat

    • There are two types of soldering irons: traditional and cold heat. These traditional models have been around much longer than newer types and are more widely used.

    Resistance Heating Unit

    • When plugged in, electricity passes through the heating unit causing "resistance heat," which begins to heat up the iron. The longer it is plugged in, the hotter the iron gets until it reaches an apex in which it stays at a certain temperature until unplugged.

    Using the Iron

    • Once heated, the iron can now be used in conjunction with the solder to reattach loose metals or other projects you have. Be careful when doing this due to the extreme temperatures being dealt with.

    Good To Know

    • Once the soldering is finished, unplug the iron to allow it to cool. This may take several minutes due to the cooling process of metals. Allow the solder to cool down properly as well to allow for a better hold.

    Uses

    • The soldering iron is a handy tool with a wide variety of uses. From fixing model cars to mending jewelry, it will certainly be a popular tool around the house.
