How to Connect a Work PC to a Home PC
Install XP Professional
-
Install Microsoft XP Professional or Vista on the work computer if it has not already been installed. The act of connecting the computers is performed by using the Microsoft operating system. Therefore, a work and a home PC cannot be connected using this system unless Microsoft is installed.
Choose a Host
-
Make one of the work computers the host, if there is a network of computers at the office. If there is only one computer that needs to be connected to, make sure it is designated as the host. (See Resources.)
Find the IP Address
-
On the work computer, click on "Start" in the lower left-hand corner. Then click on the "Control Panel." When the next window opens, click on "Performance and Maintenance." Then click on "System" and then the "Remote" tab.
Record the Information
-
Write down the IP address of the work computer.
Check the Operating System
-
Make sure the home computer is running at least Windows 95. Windows 98, Windows XP or Windows Vista will also work. However, nothing before Windows 95 will be able to process the information properly.
Install the Remote Desktop Connection
-
Install the Remote Desktop Connection client software on the home computer (see Resources). This computer will now be referred to as the client.
Keep the Computer On
-
Leave the computer running and connected to the Internet.
Begin at Home
-
At home, click on "Start," "All Programs" and "Accessories." In "Accessories," click on "Communications" and then "Remote Desktop Connection."
Write the IP Address
-
In the "Computer" box, type in the IP address of the computer that will be connected to. This number was written down in an earlier step.
Connect at Home
-
Click on "Connect" and enter the login information that is used to log onto the work computer. The connection process is now complete.
