- When a Skype phone is first powered on, the user will enter a Skype username and password to log onto the Skype network. From this point onward, the phone will auto log in the user when she turns the device on, so the phone is always connected when an Internet connection is provided. Internet connections can be from a home router or a public network both in plugged-in and Wi-Fi forms.
- Skype phones include their own Wi-Fi or plugged-in connections, depending on the type of Skype phone. Since this information is embedded into the device, the Skype phone does not need additional software installed on the user's PC because it can connect directly to networks that offer Internet usage.

Skype offers its own network which is constructed much like the Kazaa's peer-to-peer network, but its proprietary system is much more advanced. Millions of users are able to log in and stay connected to the Skype network as they make calls.
The user's voice is converted to a digital signal and sent across the Skype network to a set of worldwide super nodes that then pass the calls to the intended party. Super nodes are essentially large servers located throughout the world which provide a pass-through for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls to be handled.
