The connection between different types of household molds and different kinds of sicknesses are still being studied. It is difficult to test for, as people cannot be ethically used as test subjects for the effects of mold on humans. However, there is growing evidence that there is a strong link between household molds and many different types of ailments. Some of these include worsened asthma or asthma type symptoms in those without the disorder, respiratory problems, fatigue, rashes and frequent nausea. Those with mold allergies or asthma suffer more than the average person. The young and elderly can also be effected severely. Mold can also induce or worsen certain diseases and disorders. Some of these include: asthma, organic dust toxicity syndrome (ODTS), chronic fatigue syndrome, tremors, hypersensitivity pneumonitis and some types of cancer. Mold spores enter the body through the respiratory system.
Types of Household Mold That Make Humans Sick
There are many different types of molds, both indoor and outdoor. The types of indoor molds known or suspected to cause negative health effects in humans include stachybotrys, penicillium and aspergillus. The outdoor mold cladosporium is also dangerous to humans. The types of mold found growing in most showers are harmless, though they should be eliminated when found just to be safe. Green mold that you find growing on bread is also harmless.
Eliminating Mold
Mold most often grows in wood, paper, carpeting and fiber that has gotten wet, and remained so for a few days. Anything that has been damaged severely by mold should be discarded. When it is found on walls, or in other places that cannot be ripped up, thrown out and replaced, mold should be treated with bleach. Make sure to wear plastic gloves and a face mask when treating mold. Also, make sure to fix any water leaks that may have caused the mold infestation, to ensure that it does not return.
