How Does the Medical Alert System Work?

  1. What Is a Medical Alert System?

    • There are dozens of medical alert systems. Different private companies offer the same service: the ability to dial emergency care services such as the police, the fire department or an ambulance, in the case of a medical emergency in your home.
The system is a device either in your home or worn around your neck or wrist that contains a button that can be pressed in an emergency.

How Does the Medical Alert System Work?

    • When you press the button on the device, a call is dialed to the service you have hired. A dispatcher will call you back over an intercom system to learn what kind of help you need. For example, if you need a paramedic, the service will contact the local fire department to go to your home.

    What Specific Services Are Provided?

    • Similar services are provided by each company that operates a medical alert service. Some companies will also allow you to be contacted if you forget to take your medication.
Some of the services also extend to personal safety. For example, should you fear an intruder has entered your home, you could alert the service to summon the police department to your home.
