An Overview of Canine Osteoarthritis and Deramaxx
-
Dogs. just like humans, can suffer from osteoarthritis. This is a degenerative disease that mainly affects the joints. There is no cure for osteoarthritis. Canine osteoarthritis is as painful to dogs as the human version is to people. Pain, deterioration of joints, loss of bone mass and reduced mobility are problems that dogs with osteoarthritis face.
Deramaxx is a brand name for a prescription drug designed to help relieve the symptoms and problems associated with canine osteoarthritis. It is manufactured and distributed by Novaris Animal Health, U.S., Inc. The generic name is deracoxib. Deramaxx is a beef-flavored tablet given orally on a daily basis. In the same class as NSAIDS for humans, Deramaxx is a non-steroidal, non-narcotic, anti-inflammatory drug that is prescribed for veterinary uses only. Humans should not ingest Deramaxx.
How Deramaxx Works
-
Deramaxx is an anti-inflammatory drug in the coxid class of pharmaceuticals. It works by reducing inflammation and pain that can be caused by bone on bone contact or other stresses of osteoarthritis. The reduction of pain and swelling will help increase mobility and comfort levels of dogs suffering from osteoarthritis. Deramaxx will not cure or reverse osteoarthritis in dogs. Specifically, it helps relieve pain and helps to improve the quality of life for dogs suffering from this condition. Dogs taking Deramaxx should see an improvement in mobility. It should be easier for the dog to get up and down from a lying position to a standing position. Walking should become easier. A reduction in limping may be noticed.

Is Deramaxx Safe For All Dogs?
-
Deramaxx may be the best course of treatment for otherwise healthy dogs. To be a good candidate for Deramaxx, a dog should not have kidney or liver problems. The dog's medical history should be free from incidents involving allergies or adverse reactions to NSAIDS and corticosteroids, such as Prednisone. Discuss all medications, including vitamin and dietary supplements that the dog is currently taking, with the vet. Even over-the-counter medications, such as aspirin, should be mentioned.
Deramaxx may not be safe for all canines. Certain health problems may indicate a different course of treatment. Dogs who have had a history of stomach problems, kidney or liver problems should not take Deramaxx. Canines currently taking another NSAID or corticosteroids like Prednisone should not take Deramaxx. Any dog with a history of bloody stools or a condition that would make it susceptible to dehydration or loss of appetite is not a good candidate for treatment with Deramaxx.
