  1. Introduction

    • Hemorrhoids are veins around the anus and rectum that become swollen. As they swell, they can become sensitive and painful to touch, making it hard to sit, stand or even lay down. They can be caused by pregnancy, constipation, old age and anal sex, and are in most cases temporary, although it is not uncommon for them to reoccur throughout a lifetime. One of the most common treatment methods for hemorrhoids is Preparation H.

    Application

    • Preparation H is applied to the affected area of the anus several times a day, especially after bowel movements. It is specifically designed to help with the symptoms of hemorrhoids, which include itching, burning and swelling. It can be taken both as a suppository or used as a topical cream.

    Itching

    • One of the main ways that Preparation H works is by relieving the itching sensation. Itching leads to further irritation, which can make the hemorrhoids worse, or just more uncomfortable. Preparation H uses hydrocortisone, a well know anti-itch product, as the main ingredient for relieving the itching sensation.

    Swelling

    • Preparation H works on the vein swelling by using another active ingredient called phenylephrine. Phenylephrine is a vasoconstrictor, which means it narrows the openings of the swollen veins.

    Pain

    • Preparation H also contains the active ingredient pramoxine. Pramoxine is a local anesthetic that helps to numb the pain associated with the hemorrhoids once it is applied to the affected area.
