Cervical cancer is a malignant form of cancer that attacks the cervix and its lining. It may also affect the uterus and spread to other reproductive parts. Some women show little or no symptoms until the cancer is in its final stages, making treatment difficult and in some cases impossible.

Cervical cancer can be unpredictable in that it sometimes shows little or no symptomatic properties. However, the symptoms that can and do arise in many women are heavy vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain during intercourse and weakened pelvic bones. Scheduling regular yearly pap smear exams can help doctors catch and diagnose this condition early enough to treat it properly. If cervical cancer is left undetected, it can spread throughout the body and become fatal.

Treatment for cervical cancer varies depending on how advanced the cancer is and whether the patient suffers from other complications related to the treatment options. Usually, a hysterectomy is performed, which is the removal of the uterus and part of the vagina. Sometimes, patients undergo what is called a radical hysterectomy, which is the removal of the uterus and all associated organs such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
