Mucinex is an FDA approved drug that fights chest congestion by targeting mucus build-up in your chest. Mucinex is used as treatment for the common cold, bronchitis, sinus, nasal and chest congestion. Mucinex is composed of the two compounds guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine and is manufactured as an extended-release tablet.

Guafenesin and Pseudophedrine

Guaifenesin is used in the treatment of cough and asthma symptoms. It works to thin mucus build-up in the lungs, resulting in the relief of chest congestion. The thinning of the mucus causes it to loosen, making it easier for the patient to cough and rid the body of mucus build-up. Pseudoephedrine is commonly used as a decongestant. It works by shrinking blood vessels in nasal passages relieving discomfort of a stuffy nose.

Extended-Release Tablet

The extended-release tablet is as a 2-layer pill composition. The white layer works immediately after consumption, while the colored layer continues a steady release of medicine for up to 12 hours. This pill formation enables the extended effectiveness of the drug against targeted symptoms.

Side Effects

It is best not to combine Mucinex with other cold, cough or decongestant medication you are taking. Some possible side effects include allergic reaction causing rash, shortness of breath or swelling. Some mild side effects may include nausea, headache, upset stomach and vomiting.
