Causes of Bloody Diarrhea

  1. Food Poisoning

    • Food poisoning occurs after eating food that has been contaminated with bacteria or toxins. Symptoms are generally experienced within 48 hours of consumption. Symptoms include fever, chills, dehydration and bloody stools. If the food poisoning is severe enough, it can lead to death.

    Irritation

    • Irritable bowel syndrome is a condition that affects the muscles of the digestive system. When food is eaten, it is either digested too quickly or too slowly, which can lead to gas, bloating, abdominal pain and intermittent constipation and diarrhea. In severe instances, diarrhea can be bloody.

    Colitis

    • Ulcerative colitis is a condition that attacks the interior lining of the large intestine and the rectum simultaneously. These areas become inflamed, which leads to abdominal pain, cramping, fatigue, weight loss and bloody diarrhea.

    Crohn's Disease

    • Crohn's disease is another inflammatory disease that can attack any part of the digestive tract. But the lowest part of the small intestine called the ileum, is the area that is most affected. Symptoms include fever, skin conditions, weight loss and bloody diarrhea.

    Ulcers

    • Ulcers are caused from a bacteria that forms in the stomach called helicobactor pylori, or H. pylori. They cause sores on the lining of the intestines that make digestion of food difficult. Some of the symptoms include abdominal pain, vomiting, weakness and blood in the stool.

    Diverticulitis

    • There are little, bulging pouches called diverticula that are sometimes found in the large intestines of people over the age of 40. These pouches often times become irritated and inflamed, leading to a condition called diverticulitis. Some symptoms of diverticulitis include abdominal tenderness, nausea, bloating and bloody diarrhea.
