What Are the Causes of TMJ Dislocation?

  1. Causes

    • TMJ dislocations are generally caused by weakened jaw ligaments resulting from the lower jaw being wired shut. Other causes include prior jaw dislocations, seizures or jaw mobility syndromes like Marfan syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

    Prevention

    • TMJ dislocations are preventable. The best way to prevent jaw dislocations is to avoid eating foods that cause jaw stress, like over-cooked meats, raw carrots, hard candy and ice cubes. If you have a history of jaw dislocations, then you should also place your hand under your jaw when you yawn to prevent your jaw bone from moving out of socket.

    Treatment

    • If your jaw pops out of socket, the best way to replace your jaw is to relax and guide your lower jaw back in to place. Usually this can be done without the help of a dentist, but if you cannot get your jaw back in place, go see a dentist or doctor immediately. Popping your jaw back into place can also be done without anesthesia, but in some cases, a muscle relaxer is needed to keep your jaw muscles relaxed enough to pop the joint back into its socket. The best thing to do when your jaw dislocates is to relax and not to panic.
