How Do Florists Dye Carnations?

  1. About

    • Carnations have been cultivated for centuries. Their scientific name is Dianthus caryophyllus, which translates to "flower of love." The delicate ruffled appearance, durability and longevity of the flower make it a popular selection for bouquets. Carnations also have the distinctive ability to soak up colored dye and change colors. Through this method, carnations are available in a nearly endless array of colors.

    Stem Dye

    • The most common way to dye carnations is known as stem dyeing. The stems are cut and soaked in a solution of colored dye and water. As the flowers drink the water, the dye also travels through the stem to the bloom. The petals of the carnation will then take on the color of the dye. This technique is usually used on white carnations to best present the color of the dye.

    Spray Dye

    • A second way of dyeing carnations is to use a floral spray dye. This specially formulated dye is lightly sprayed onto the exterior of the flower petals. Spray dye will produce a brighter, more vivid color but must be done carefully to produce an even and realistic hue. Because carnations posses the ability to soak up the dye through their stems, spray dyes are used less frequently on these than on other flowers.
