    Telephone Line

  1. DSL service that is provided from a telephone requires a filter or adapter to connect to each outlet in a house that has a telephone connected. The DSL signal that is sent over the telephone line is quite strong and causes static to be heard in the line. A filter will eliminate that static by suppressing the DSL signal so it does not interfere with a standard telephone.
  2. Modem

  3. Telephone companies that provide DSL service typically provide a DSL modem, which is used to convert the DSL signal to it can be connected to a computer. A DSL modem is connected to a computer system by using an Ethernet cable that connects to a computer. An Ethernet cable is usually provided with a DSL modem but can also be purchased online at sites like CDW or at a retailer such as Best Buy.
  4. Ethernet

  5. Ethernet is a type of connection that is used to network computers as well as providing a way to connect to the Internet. A computer that does not have an Ethernet adapter will need to have one added to use a DSL modem to connect to the Internet. An Ethernet adapter uses a standard PCI connection to connect to a computer's main board or motherboard.
  6. Speeds

  7. The speeds provided from the telephone company for DSL service can vary depending on what speed is needed and what a customer wants to pay. Speeds for DSL service can range from 128 kbps to 3 mbps, depending on a customer's subscription or package.
  8. Price

  9. Typically, DSL service is bundled with other services from a phone company and can be provided at various prices. Many companies though are starting to offer a standalone option for DSL service, which can start at $35.99.
