How Does a Hammer Drill Work?

A hammer drill is similar to a regular drill with some added features. They are more heavy duty and have more horsepower. For this reason, they are used for bigger jobs that require drilling into thicker and more solid surfaces. In similar fashion to a regular drill, they rotate, but they also have a pounding action. This is the action that makes them able to drill into concrete, steel, cinder block and pressure-treated wood.
Depth

Hammer drills can come with a depth rod that is mounted to the top. This comes into play when you are drilling a hole and you want to go a specified distance. You adjust the depth rod and stop drilling when it touches the surface.

Speeds

There are some projects that take more torque than others. For this reason, hammer drills often come with various speeds. For general drilling of small holes, you would use the low gear. When more power is needed, you would use the high gear. They also have a reverse option to get a bit unstuck. This often happens when drilling into wet pressure treated wood.
Handles

Since hammer drills are powerful and use a lot of torque, they also come equipped with handles on the side. You place one hand on the back and squeeze the trigger and you grab the handle with your other hand. This allows you to apply a maximum amount of downward pressure when you are drilling. This handle is adjustable and can be removed when drilling in tight spaces.
Cordless

There are many occasions when you are in a location where there is no power. This could be at a new house job site or out in the woods building a tree stand. That's where the cordless version comes into play. They have the same bells and whistles of regular hammer drills, except they run on a battery and they can be transported to remote locations.
