  1. Millions of people suffer from hair loss. Losing your hair has a great effect on self confidence but surgical hair transplants can be pricey. One solution to restoring hair is Monoxidil, which is sold over-the-counter as Rogaine.
  2. Although Rogaine is not a permanent solution to hair loss, it has been proven to be effective in slowing loss and strengthening thinning hair for those who are disciplined in its use. To achieve the best results, it is recommended to apply Monoxidil to the hair and scalp by rubbing it in, somewhat like a shampoo (without rinsing) twice a day. Originally produced as a drug to help lower blood pressure, Monoxidil opens the blood vessels to allow for easier blood flow. This effect stimulates the weakening hair follicle and protects it from the hormone that causes hair loss, dyhydrotestosterone, also known as DHT. Without a regimented routine, Monoxidil's effect diminishes. Side effects are minimal and a few users experience irritation, itching, or unwanted growth of facial hair.
  3. Monoxidil is not a cure for hair loss, but it does help reduce the rate of loss. Once Monoxidil is no longer applied, hair loss will continue. Those who have experienced a great deal of hair loss do not get the same positive results as those who begin using Monoxidil when they first notice loss because it cannot regenerate hair once the follicle has stopped producing.
